Where signallers work: signal boxes, panels and operating centres

“Signal box” covers a wide range of workplaces. A signaller might work a Victorian building with a row of levers, a panel of buttons and lights from the 1970s, or a computer workstation in a large modern control centre. Where you work shapes the job day to day, and it also affects your grade and pay.
Mechanical signal boxes
The traditional signal box: a building beside the line with a frame of large levers, each connected by rods or wires to a signal or set of points. Pulling a lever physically moves the equipment. Many use bells to communicate with neighbouring boxes about trains.
These boxes usually control a short stretch of line, often with a level crossing, and are frequently worked by one person. The work is physical and hands-on, and the railway outside the window is part of the picture.
Panel signal boxes
From the mid-twentieth century, many areas moved to panel boxes. A panel shows a diagram of the track, with lights showing where trains are, and routes are set by pressing buttons for the start and end of a route rather than pulling individual levers. One panel box can control a much larger area than a mechanical box.
Screen-based signalling centres
Modern signalling is increasingly done at workstations with computer screens, a keyboard and a mouse or trackerball. The screens show the track layout and train positions, and routes are set on screen. Some systems set routes automatically for the timetabled service, with the signaller supervising and taking over when needed.
Large centres cover long stretches of busy railway, with several signallers working different areas from the same room.
Rail operating centres
Network Rail's long-term plan is to bring signalling for much of the network into a small number of large regional control centres, known as rail operating centres, replacing many older boxes over a period of decades. In the meantime, all of the types above remain in use, so trainee signallers may be posted to any of them.
How the workplace affects the job
- Grade and pay: a signaller's grade reflects how demanding the location is to work, so busier and more complex areas are graded higher. Moving to a higher grade usually means moving to a different location.
- Working alone or in a team: small boxes are often single-person posts, including at night; large centres have colleagues in the same room.
- Workload: a quiet rural box may have long periods with little happening, where staying alert is the challenge. A busy centre can be continuously demanding.
- Getting there: boxes are not always near a station or public transport, which matters for early and late shifts.
